Swimming spots and Beaches on Gotland
Gotland's coastline stretches for 80 miles, offering everything from soft sandy beaches to hidden lakes and even old limestone quarries for swimming. Whether you prefer popular spots or quiet, serene corners, Gotland has a beach for everyone. Below is an overview of some of the best beaches and swimming spots on the island, divided into categories to help you find the perfect spot for your visit.
Popular Beaches
The most popular beach on Gotland is undeniably Tofta Beach, and for good reason—it's a beautiful beach with all amenities you might need.
Other popular spots include Sudersand on Fårö, considered one of the best beaches in the world, as well as Ljugarn, Sandviken, Ihreviken, Austre, Hörte, and Åminne. All of these are wonderful natural beaches, each with nearby facilities to accommodate visitors.
For those who prefer beaches closer to Visby, there are sandy shores like Norderstrand, Snäck, Gustavsvik, and Visby Havsbad. These are especially favored by younger crowds.
Family-Friendly Beaches
Many of the beaches mentioned—like Sudersand on Fårö, Ljugarn, Sandviken, Ihreviken, Austre, Hörte, and Åminne—are fantastic options for families, offering natural beauty and nearby amenities.
Tofta Beach can also be a good choice, though its lively atmosphere may not suit families with very young children.
If you're looking for a calmer family-friendly beach, consider Lausviken (with its shallow waters and soft sand), Nybro Bad, Kvarnåkershamn, or Gustavs. All of these are natural beaches without man-made modifications.
Lakeside Swimming and Quarries
There are two types of inland swimming spots on Gotland: lakes and quarries.
- Lakes: These aren’t muddy ponds but rather decent swimming spots, such as Tingstäde Träsk and Sigvalde Träsk (which is 16 meters deep).
- Quarries: Locals have enjoyed swimming in these for generations, and in recent years, they’ve become popular with tourists as well. There are two main options: Blå Lagunen and Smöjen.
Romantic Beaches
For a more intimate experience, Gotland’s beaches are perfect for quiet reflection or romantic moments. As the sun sets, the island reveals its softer side, with breathtaking views and a calming atmosphere.
Djupvik is an ideal spot for watching the sun go down over the Karlsöarna islands, while Ihreviken offers a similar experience with a cozy beachside restaurant nearby. Sigsarve Beach, with its dramatic cliffs and the sound of pebbles rolling in the waves, is another beautiful location, though swimming here isn’t recommended.
Whether you're visiting with your partner, family, or even on your own, Gotland’s beaches have something to offer everyone. Pack a picnic, explore the shoreline, collect seashells, or simply relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Even on a stormy autumn day, the beaches have their own special charm, with the wind brushing gently against your cheeks.
