Ahr fishing village
Nestled just behind Falholmen, safely protected from the myths of wild water spirits, lies Ahr's fishing village. This charming spot features nine privately owned fishing huts, arranged around a small bay with about half a dozen piers. The village is maintained by a local association, preserving its historic charm.
Historical Significance in Fleringe Parish
Located in Fleringe parish, Ahr's fishing village has a rich history. By the late 1600s, Ahr was one of the eight largest fishing villages on Gotland. It remained a center for professional fishing well into the 1900s. Today, it serves as an idyllic retreat for recreational fishermen, providing a peaceful escape from daily life.
The Legacy of Lime Quarrying
Looking northwest from the fishing village, one can still see remnants of the old shipping site for lime, tied to Ahr's quarry. Although weathered by time and nature, this area holds deep historical significance. Lime quarrying began in the region in the 1600s and continued until 1990. One of the quarries, known as "Blå lagunen" (The Blue Lagoon), has gained widespread recognition for its striking beauty.
A Transformation Over Centuries
At the beginning of the 20th century, Ahr was home to around twenty fishermen. However, over the centuries, the village has shifted from being a center of livelihood to a place of leisure and relaxation. The slow pace of time has turned what was once a hard-earned living into a tranquil haven for those seeking peace by the water.
